Greenwashing Report 2009

May 8, 2009

I already knew that some labels found on products are false and companies sometimes use irrevalent terms when it comes to “green” products but I had no idea it was so common. Read the 2009 Greenwashing Report and educate yourself on the tricks marketers are playing on us.

How long can I keep this?

Check out this handy chart at The Kitchn blog. I know I’ve asked this question before so I’m sure there’s someone else out there who will appreciate this. You can even download a chart and hang it on your fridge!

Green Scams

April 24, 2009

Whenever I talk about how I like “natural” or “green” cleaning products, someone brings up Clorox Green Works. Ever since Clorox came out with their “natural” line of products, I didn’t trust them. And now, there’s an article on MSNBC about “The Four Biggest Green Marketing Scams” and guess who’s on the list?? Yep, Clorox Green Works.

The moral of the story: you can’t always trust products that state they are “natural”, “green”, or “organic”. Until we find a way to regulate and limit the use of these words, you and I are going to have to be careful and selective when it comes to the food we eat, the cleaning products we use, and the products we purchase.

p.s. I use vinegar and water to clean my bathroom, mirrors, windows, tv, etc… =)

Mountain Rose Herbs

April 24, 2009

Looking to buy bulk organic herbs & spices or maybe some organic teas? Well look no further, Mountain Rose Herbs has it all!

They also sell carrier oils (make your own soap), wax (make your own candles), and lots of other bulk ingredients. I’m dying to buy some bulk herbs to make some homemade teas (mmm relaxing lavender tea) and when I finally get off my butt and decide to do it, you be I’ll be buying my supplies from Mountain Rose Herbs!

Happy Earth Day!!

April 22, 2009

Today has been a lovely day so far! I’m rocking a sinus headache but it’s just reminding me of how lovely Chicago weather is! Cold and rainy yesterday; warm and sunny today! I love it!

I am mostly enjoying the great shows that have been on today focusing on being Earth friendly. So far Oprah, The Price is Right, and Martha Stewart have all featured environmentally friendly products and/or tips. Like I told my Mom yesterday, “Earth Day is like Christmas for my people!”. =)

Step outside for a bit today and enjoy the weather no matter where you live! I hope you have a great Earth Day!

DIY: Tissue Paper Carnations

April 17, 2009

I am obsessed with poms lately but I have no luck when I try to make them (maybe I should just buy some from PomLove).

I found a tutorial via Twitter on Folding Trees for these super cute tissue paper carnations! So of course, I have been making them all day. They are soooooo adorable and super easy to make!

Here’s a picture of my lil work area on the kitchen table:

I strayed from the directions a bit:

  • I’m using my ColorBox fluid chalk inkpad to color my flowers. You can remove each plate so it’s super easy to color the paper.
  • I also reused some tissue paper that I got from the store when I bought something glass. I love the off white color and reusing paper is very green!
  • I’m using my Martha Stewart paper cutter minus the blade to make perfect circles. Instead of putting the blade in the hole, I use a pencil and get a perfect circle!

And a craptastic close up of the flowers:
